Dr. Matthew Johnson, Ph.D.
Theology, Leadership & Ministry Formation
About Matthew.
Dr. Matthew Johnson is a scholar, theologian, strategist, and ministry leader whose work is grounded in a distinguished interdisciplinary academic foundation. He graduated with honors from Morehouse College, earning a dual major in History and Philosophy with a minor in Religion, and later earned a Master of Religious Studies from the University of Chicago, where he further developed his expertise in theology, ethics, biblical interpretation, religious scholarship, and critical inquiry.
In addition to his formal graduate education, Dr. Johnson completed postdoctoral research and advanced training in Traditional and Contemporary Psychoanalysis, expanding his understanding of human development, organizational dynamics, leadership, pastoral care, emotional formation, and spiritual transformation. This unique combination of historical scholarship, philosophical reasoning, theological depth, and psychoanalytic research informs his distinctive approach to leadership development, organizational strategy, ministry effectiveness, and Kingdom advancement.
Dr. Johnson earned his Ph.D. in Philosophical Theology from the University of Chicago Divinity School. His theological formation and continued scholarship span philosophical theology, systematic theology, ministry leadership, preaching, and the relationship between faith, culture, and human experience. He serves as Senior Pastor of Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and brings more than three decades of ministry leadership, preaching, pastoral care, theological education, scholarly research, and mentoring experience.
Long before the current Kingdom Advancement ecosystem was fully formed, Dr. Johnson served as a trusted mentor, theological voice, and early source of encouragement to founder Kimberly J. Lewis. His wisdom helped strengthen the broader Kingdom Advancement vision and its commitment to ensuring that innovation serves ministry without compromising theological integrity.
As a Senior Kingdom Strategist, Dr. Johnson contributes theological wisdom, pastoral insight, leadership formation, mentoring, and strategic guidance for churches, pastors, ministry leaders, faith-based initiatives, and Kingdom-centered learning experiences.
